It’s hard to argue against the fact that 2022 is set to be a big year for both fully electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), thanks to the new regulations, a growing preference for green vehicles, greater availability of charging infrastructure, not forgetting advancement in performance and EV range.
With that in mind, we thought it would be better to compile a list of the most anticipated electric vehicles and coolest plug-in hybrids slated to hit our roads in the next 12 months, along with a brief blurb about each so you can start planning which ones you want to test drive first.
BMW iX xDrive50
Kicking things off is the BMW iX xDrive50, a “sports activity vehicle.” Initially launched as a concept electric car referred to as the iNext that would battle with the Tesla all-electric Model 3 sedan, EV enthusiasts and customers were excited to see an electrified 3 series expected to hit the market priced around $40,000. Unfortunately for those customers, the car has now evolved into the electric crossover iX we see nowadays, with a starting price of $82,300, excluding destination fees and taxes.
Still, the iX features four-wheel steering, air suspension, all-wheel drive, and a 516 HP electric motor, which BMW says, it can deliver up to 564 lb-ft of torque and acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. The BMW iX xDrive50 also promises up to 300 miles of range and additional 90 miles of range after 10 minutes of DC fast charging.
The 2022 BMW iX is scheduled to arrive in March, with the first destinations being Europe, followed by the United States.
Ford F-150 Lightning
Speaking of heavy-duty all-electric pickup trucks, 2022 will be the year the Ford F-150 Lightning finally lands. The all-electric F-150 Lighting EV is set to get some stiff competition from GMC Hummer EV Pickup, Ram 1500 EV, the Tesla Cybertruck, the R1T, the Bollinger B2, and other electric pickups set to arrive in 2022.
The truck is expected to arrive in various configurations, with EPA estimates of 300 miles for 563-hp dual-motor AWD and 230 miles for RWD models. Both the all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive models promise 775 pound-feet of torque and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in just 4.0 seconds.
So far, the truck has garnered more than 200,000 reservations, and the company claims that the Lighting is already sold out into 2024. The truck is expected to hit the market, possibly spring 2022, with an MSRP of $39,974 before any taxes and fees.

The Cadillac Lyriq will debut in two configurations: single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive version. It will sit upon General Motors’ modular platform (BEV3) and the company claims that it will boast over 300 miles per single full charge, thanks to Ultium GM’s scalable battery architecture.
Other features that the car is likely to have are Heads Up AR Display, a giant 33.0-inch curved LED display, and more. The Cadillac Lyriq will have a starting price just below $60k. Initial deliveries of the car are expected to kick off in March this year.
Kia EV6
The 2022 Kia EV6 will arrive along with its sibling, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 – both of which are from Korean automakers. The Kia EV6 will ride on the same Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) as the Ioniq 5.
The car is expected to boast an impressive range of 310 miles and up to 576 horsepower. Just like the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, the EV6 is offered in two configurations: rear-wheel- and all-wheel-drive. The AWD models are expected to be paired with a 77.4-kWh battery pack.
Once it hits the market, the EV6 is expected to have a starting price of $45,000.
