You are driving along, and when you press the brakes the steering wheel starts shaking back and forth. What could it be?
Brake rotors
The most common culprit is usually when the brake rotors become warped or uneven. This warping can be caused by either continuous hard brakes as well as overtightened lug nut bolts. Or it could be that the rotors are just too old and worn out.
To further confirm it is the rotor, the steering wheel will shake slightly as you brake and you should also be able to hear a rhythmic “thud” sound in proportion with the vehicle speed.
Brake pad
Although not common, the brake pads can also be the problem if it is worn out that much.
If the brake pads are the issue then you should also hear a screeching or grinding sound while braking.
Brake Caliper Components
-If your caliper guide pins were not re-greased while you got your brakes done then this can cause problems to your braking system one of which could be a shaky steering wheel.
- Also, double check to make sure all the components are installed properly because any improper installation can be felt later on while driving.
Suspension
-Although not common, the suspension components can be worn out enough that when you hit the brakes there may be a shaking in the steering wheel as more weight is being transferred to the front suspension.
