Clicking sound coming from steering column?

You are driving down a rough bumpy road and you start to hear a clicking, ticking, or knocking sound near the gas and brake pedal. So you pull to the side trying to figure out where this sound is coming from. As you shake the steering wheel to the left and right you hear the ticking sound again.

It almost sounds like something within the steering column is loose.

Yes, you are correct. The sound you are hearing is most likely caused by the steering column u-joint which has developed some play and therefore is causing this unusual sound.

Make sure to bring your vehicle to your local mechanic if you experience a similar sound in the steering column because the last thing you want to happen when you're driving is something going wrong with the steering.
