You open the hood, just doing a routine checkup on the engine compartment…. Coolant, good…. Power steering fluid, good….. Then you look at your brake fluid reservoir and it looks like this!
As you can see in the picture, the brake fluid started to slowly eat away at the tank until it gave out and cracked at the top.
Let's get it fixed!
First let’s start off by removing the battery cover and the water deflector tray
Remove brake fluid spout filter with flat head screwdriver working around the edge until it slides out
What you should do next is empty as much fluid from the tank as possible using a turkey baster or cheap manual fluid pump.
Alright, now place a rag or a few shop towels underneath the tank to catch any excess fluid. And then gently but firmly grab the back of the tank and pull up towards you until the tank separates from the master cylinder.
In order to remove the electrical connector, push the metal clip in and pull down on the connector until it disconnects.
Bring in the NEW PART!
Take your new tank and first connect the electrical connector until it clicks.
Align the two tubes on the bottom of the tank with the rubber gasket on the master cylinder and push down.
FILL IT UP WITH DOT 4!
My vehicle (Audi A6 C5 1997-2004) uses DOT 4 brake fluid according to the owners manual that meets SAE J1704 specification which this one meets.
Carefully fill the tank up making sure to not overfill. Just be under the MAX fill line. Finally, close it back up.
Clean up brake fluid residue with soap and water in a spray bottle and spray away, and rinse.
Next align the water deflector tray and snap it in place
Finally put on the battery cover trim.
And we're done!
That’s it you're all done within around 20 minutes you got yourself a brand new tank, saved yourself some money, and maybe learned something new.
