2022 Lamborghini Urus: The SUV with supercar DNA
The automotive industry is undergoing a much-needed revolution, with EVs increasing in number and sedans/coupes losing their appeal. Nowadays, SUVs are the name of the game – electric powered or not - and enthusiasts are preferring them over anything else. The effect is so strong that even traditional manufacturers that used to avoid making large bulky vehicles are shifting their focus towards them.
Lamborghini, a brand that only made super-cars or hyper-cars before, now produces a sports SUV called the Urus.
The Lamborghini Urus first came out in 2018, and it impressed even the most hard-line critics. The SUV is the pinnacle of performance, with looks that turn heads and raise eyebrows.
Exterior Design
The design team at Lamborghini had a blank canvas, to begin with, and they did not disappoint. The Urus has an exterior that begs to be looked at and that's a good thing if you intend to sell the SUV for a quarter of a million dollars.
At first glance, you can tell the Urus is a Lamborghini vehicle. It has the signature hexagonal pattern in all the right places. The front grille, for example, has a lot of that design language. But the designers haven’t over-used this key design pattern. Instead, sharp and aggressive lines are used to give the Urus a sporty and dominant appearance.
The same philosophy is evident on the sides and the beautiful rims. But the true beauty of the SUV shows in the rear. The sloped rooftop joins the rear end with a small spoiler added to the mix. Otherwise, the transition from front to back is seamless and uninterrupted by any flashy design elements.
Interior Cabin
The story is quite different inside the cabin, where Lamborghini has gone all-out with their ideas. The use of flamboyant colors contrasted with the exquisiteness of black works very well to support the ‘sports’ theme. There is widespread usage of expensive materials like carbon fiber and faux-suede. The two combine to give a premium feel that’s appropriate for an expensive vehicle as such.
In terms of design, the interior feels a lot like a plane’s cockpit. You can find many fighter-jet design cues, with the shifter resembling a fighter jet throttle stick and the starter button hiding underneath a bright red flap. Such extras are popular among Lamborghini enthusiasts.
Apart from the interesting interior, what's more, impressive is the ample space in the Urus. There is space for three in the rear, and on top of that, you get 22 cubic feet of cargo space. That’s a lot of storage area considering you don’t get too much of it in all of the other Lamborghini's.
The Lamborghini Urus has all the latest technology, with a state-of-the-art infotainment system.
You get navigation, Apple Car Play, and Android Auto, among other things.
In other words, you won’t be left wishing for more while seated in this "super-car jet."
Engine and Performance
A sports vehicle is known to have a beefed-up engine under its hood, and the Lamborghini Urus is no exception. Hiding inside is a powerful twin-turbo V8 that puts out an impressive 641 hp. The engine is mated to an automatic 8-speed transmission. Together the two allow the Urus to go from 0-60 mph in an unbelievable 3.1 seconds. The top speed? It touches 190 mph on a good day.
The Urus also has adjustable suspension, so you can change the ride height from within the cabin. Moreover, the driving modes help with this part, as they automatically adjust the ride height based on the mode. So, if you are in sport mode, the Urus drops down a few inches for better grip and cornering.
Interestingly, the Lamborghini Urus feels extremely agile and handles well, as anyone sitting behind the wheel will tell you. Keep in mind, the Urus is an SUV, which is not known for its handling. But the folks at Lamborghini have designed their vehicle so well that it is a treat to drive.
The fuel economy -if it is a concern for you- won’t make you too happy.
The EPA estimates that the Urus would give 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. Those aren't excellent figures, but who worries about fuel when driving an expensive super-car of a SUV?
Conclusion
Lamborghini offers the Urus in three variants. The base variant is priced at $225,501, and it has all the base amenities. One step up the ladder is the Pearl Capsule, which adds an exterior package, several luxury options, and off-road capabilities. The price bumps up to $246,723 quite easily with this one. Last on the list is the Graphite Capsule, which could set you down to $249,376.
The price of this vehicle is justified, given that it has the Lamborghini badge and unmatched performance to back its claim. But even if you look at it objectively, the Lamborghini Urus towers above its competition. Perhaps, the new Ferrari SUV could be a challenger?
......Let’s leave that comparison for another time!
